Sunday 23rd March and we return to Des Connor park for our second week of junior volunteering.  The forecast was for a bit of rain but they got that wrong.

We arrived by 07:30 and “signed on”. I was timekeeper for the run and Hilary was one of 4 Funnel managers.  The team were also trying a triple funnel for the first time.

At 7:50 I made my way to the start line and at about 08:00 the run started.  I made my way to the finish line. Whilst doing this there were a few drops of rain.  First finisher crossed the line in just under 8 minutes and all was going smoothly.  Then I clearly got out of sync with the tokens person and was required to add some extra presses to get back in sync (this happened a few times). And then the skies opened with an almost biblical downpour.  Now timing and raining is not normally an issue for me as I’m under the scooter rain cover.  That was not the case for me this time and I have now personally witnessed the impact of rain on a smart phone screen.  As a result, the number of unknown runners was double the normal amount. I need to talk to the team again to fully appreciate the methodology utilised.

From a funnel manager perspective, Hilary says. “It was a new type of funnel system introduced today. Cross finish line then enter 1 of 3 smaller funnels as directed by Neil – I was effectively a ‘funnel blocker’ to stop the other 2 being used until needed 🙂 A bit like herding cats, but fun all the same – it worked pretty well at my point. The heavens opened and all we could do was embrace the wetness! Everything soaked, right through to you know where!”
